Legazpi City once again celebrates Bicol’s folk epic with this year’s Ibalong Festival. Happening from August 8-22, 2011, this year’s festivities mark a major shift in the usually-October celebration. Early this year, the Legazpi City Sangguniang Panglusod Tourism Committee had passed a resolution changing the date of the 20-year old festival. It was approved by Legazpi City Mayor Geraldine Rosal. Ibalong Festival 2011 detaches itself from Sorsogon’s Kasanggayahan Festival and Bacolod’s Masskara Festival, both being celebrated during the month of October.
First celebrated in 1991, the Ibalong Festival is an annual festival being observed by the Bicolanos, by the Legazpenos in particular. An epic telling the adventures of the three heroes of the ancient Bicol, known as the Ibalon, Ibalong Festival intends to honor Bicol’s legendary heroes Bantong, Baltog and Handyong.
